Statistics and Biographical Sketch
Lawson
Bowling has taught in the Department of
History at Manhattanville since 1984. He is Faculty in
Residence in Spellman Hall, Room
111. He is Manhattanville's Faculty
Athletics Representative for the National
Collegiate Athletic Association and has
attended ten N.C.A.A.
conventions.
Born
in Abington,
Pennsylvania, he graduated
from Lakeside High
School in Atlanta where he was the
recipient of the Atlanta Journal Cup as the Best All-Around Senior. He
attended Atlanta's Emory
University on a four-year
National Merit Scholarship, majoring in English and
History. He returned to his native
Philadelphia to earn a master's degree
in education at the University of
Pennsylvania. For three years he
taught history and economics at Forest Park (Ga.)
Comprehensive Senior High School before
moving to New York to study United States
history at Columbia University.
His
particular academic interests include the
twentieth century, the history of sports, California, Italy, American economic
history, and
World War II. Some of his other activities include golf,
Pontiac Firebird
TransAms, and following the New York
Islanders as a season-ticket holder.
He
is a member of the American Historical
Association,
the Organization of American
Historians, the New-York
Historical Society, the California Historical
Society,
the North
American Society for Sport History, the Morgan Library (New
York), the
Penn Club of New York,
the Historical
Society, and the Society
for Military History.
