MANHATTANVILLE COLLEGE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
ATTENDANCE POLICIES
(Effective Fall, 1986)
(Revised Fall, 1999 and Fall, 2004)
Attendance at Concerts and Recitals for Music Majors (All Programs):
The Music Department considers attendance at concerts to be a vital part of the students' musical training and an indication of commitment to the major. To that end, a list of specifically required concerts will be posted on the Music Department bulletin board at the beginning of each semester. Each year, music majors will be required to attend a selection of twelve on-campus concerts and recitals as part of the degree requirements within the Music major.
Since the focus of this requirement is to build appreciation for the repertoire and to build support for one another as performers, students may not fulfill this requirement with concerts in which they participate. This regulation will be strictly enforced and its satisfactory completion is a requisite for graduation. Attendance will be taken at the concerts, and it is the student's responsibility to sign in with the faculty member on duty at each event.
Attendance is COMPULSORY for all music majors at the following events:
1. At least two large ensemble concerts each semester, including Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Big Band Jazz Ensemble, or Chorus concerts
2. One Faculty Concert each semester
3. At least one Informal Student Recital each semester
4. The Freshman-Sophomore-Junior Recital
5. The Composers' Concert
6. One additional concert or recital each semester
In the event that an unavoidable absence is necessary, the student is expected to notify the Director of Music in advance of the program and to provide, in writing, a legitimate excuse for that absence. Music majors are expected to make-up any absence by attending other concerts on campus, or off-campus concerts with prior approval.
Some Music Department classes will also use concert attendance as one of the criterion for grading for all class participants. The following courses are among those to use concert attendance as a criterion for grading. Check each course syllabus for attendance requirements.
