 Common Guidelines

  1. Students majoring in music have performance requirements each semester.  Check the online Advising Manual for Music Majors and plan performance opportunities.  All junior and senior B.A. in Music and B.Mus. in Music Education students must perform each semester on an approved public recital or concert (see page 8 of the Advising Manual).

  2. The Informal Recitals are scheduled as follows:  October 15 and November 12.  Juniors and seniors should perform on October 15.  The length of these concerts will be limited.  Instructors should be sure to schedule students so that they meet the performance requirements.  Students must fill out a Recital Permission Form to be handed into the Music Office on the Monday prior to the recital by 5:00 p.m.

  3. Lessons missed by students are not made-up.

  4. Lessons missed by teachers are to be made-up at a mutually agreed upon time.

  5. If a student incurs more than two unexcused absences during the semester, the student will be asked to appear before the instructor and/or the Director of Music to explain the unexcused absences.  Refusal to appear could result in dismissal from the lessons.  Note:  music majors and minors must take lessons for a letter grade. The pass/fail option for other students does not lessen the requirements for the course.

  6. An absence may be considered excused only for medical reasons, verifiable family or personal emergencies, or recognized Manhattanville religious holidays.

  7. All absences by students for the above reasons require pre-notification to the teacher to be considered for “excused” designation.  In the case of sudden emergencies, the teacher must be notified as soon as possible and be presented with a written reason for the absence.

  8. All students registered for Applied Music Lessons are required to take a Jury Examination at the end of each semester.  Only in rare instances, and for extraordinary reasons, may a student defer a Jury Examination in any given semester.  In order to defer the exam, an Incomplete Course Form must be filed with Academic Advising approved by the Director, the applied music teacher and the Dean of Studies.

  9. Any student who fails to appear and perform at a Jury Examination will receive a grade of F for the semester.

  10. Applied Music students are required to fulfill all departmental requirements, as well as specific requirements set forth by the individual applied music teacher, including attendance at performance clinics, dress code, materials to be learned, etc.

  11. Final applied music term grades are determined as follows:
                   Teacher’s Term Grade = 70%
                   Jury Grade = 30%

  12. Grades will not be entered without the completion of a Student Progress Form at the end of the semester.
