COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Focus of this course is to introduce students to the basics of healthy vocal production and performance, using a sound classical approach adapted to the performance requirements of both musical theatre and classical voice. Although the course is designed as preparation for private voice instruction, students of varied levels will benefit.
Students will study:
Ø The physical apparatus of the voice
Ø Components of song: Rhythm, Lyrics, Melody, Harmony
Ø Phonetics and text projection (diction)
Ø The variety of singing styles through history
Ø Effective performance practice
Students will be assigned solo and ensemble numbers, and will learn both by doing and by observing when not performing. There will be a showing of work at the final class of the semester.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
DAILY PRACTICE of assigned music and exercises.
This is a studio course requiring active and regular participation. Attendance is mandatory. Absences and lateness will adversely affect your grade. Professional theatre etiquette is expected:
Ø Be on time and ready to work.
Ø Be prepared (i.e., assigned work memorized on time).
Ø Be dressed to move freely.
Ø Be focused and involved in the process.
Ø Be respectful and supportive of other class members.
As with any professional company, you must notify the instructor by campus voice mail or email if extenuating circumstances force you to be absent or late. Illness, injury, or family emergency must be subsequently documented through regular College channels.
ASSIGNMENTS:
Ø Music to be learned, texts to be translated or analyzed;
Ø Reading/listening/viewing assignments to be analyzed and reviewed;
Ø Live performances to be analyzed and reviewed;
Ø Research/writing assignments as assigned; and
Ø In-class singing as assigned.
EVALUATION CRITERIA:
Each student is assessed on an individual basis for participation, progress, and professional demeanor (including theatre etiquette, above), effort, attitude, willingness to achieve beyond current level, and willingness to accept and implement correction.
Ø Attendance: MANDATORY
Ø Participation and Evidence of Vocal Practice and Improvement: 50%
Ø Performance at Showing of Work: 25%
Ø Written Work: 25%
