MUA 4480: Manhattanville College Community Jazz Ensemble

Course Description:

This class is open by audition to Manhattanville students who play saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass or drum set. Following successful student body auditions, vacancies in the ensemble are filled by interested community members, again by audition. The members of this class meet to read, rehearse, perform and improvise music for the large jazz ensemble. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.

None. Arrangements and compositions for jazz ensemble are supplied.

To be supplied or referred by instructor, given assigned repertoire, recommendations might include recordings of pieces to be performed, or exemplary performers/improvisers in a given jazz idiom.

Course Objectives, from NYS Learning Standards for The Arts:

Standard I:          

In instrumental ensembles, read (and perform) difficult/very difficult music (NYSSMA level V or VI); exhibit independent control over tone quality, intonation, rhythm, dynamics, balance, blend, expression, and articulation; and respond appropriately to the gestures of the conductor.

Improvise …. extended musical compositions that exhibit cohesiveness and musical expression.

Standard II:

Use traditional, electronic, and nontraditional media for composing, arranging, and performing music

Standard III:

Through listening, analyze and evaluate their own and others’ performances, improvisations, and compositions and suggest improvements.

Standard IV:

In performing ensembles, read and perform repertoire in a culturally authentic manner and use culture based criteria for assessing performances, their own and others.

Attendance of all class meetings:                                      40%

Individual practice leading to prepared and
