MUA 4484: Wind Ensemble Laboratory

Course Description:

This class is open by audition to Manhattanville students who play instruments comprising the modern Wind Ensemble. The members of this class meet to read, rehearse, perform music for winds, brass and percussion. In addition, music education majors have the opportunity to survey repertoire and rehearsal techniques appropriate to school ensembles. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.

Course Objectives, from NYS Learning Standards for The Arts:

Standard I:          

In instrumental ensembles, read (and perform) difficult/very difficult music (NYSSMA level V or VI); exhibit independent control over tone quality, intonation, rhythm, dynamics, balance, blend, expression, and articulation; and respond appropriately to the gestures of the conductor.

Standard III:

Through listening, analyze and evaluate their own and others’ performances…and suggest improvements.

Standard IV:

In performing ensembles, read and perform repertoire in a culturally authentic manner and use culture based criteria for assessing performances, their own and others’.

Attendance of all class meetings:                                      40%

Individual practice leading to prepared and
