INSTRUMENTAL RUDIMENTS II - Woodwinds/Percussion

Woodwind instrumental instruction shall encompass the following aspects:

bullet

Fundamental instruction in performance of flute, clarinet, and alto saxophone

bullet

Information regarding playing procedures of additional woodwind instruments including, but not limited to, double reed instruments

bullet

Information regarding scoring techniques and uses of woodwind instruments in a variety of musical levels and styles

bullet

Exposure to accepted instrumental music instruction method books

bullet

Exposure to basic repertoire for individual woodwind instruments and for small and large ensembles

bullet

Basic maintenance and emergency repair techniques of woodwind instruments

Percussion instrumental instruction shall encompass the following aspects:

bullet

Familiarity with performance technique(s) on snare drum

bullet

Exposure to mallet percussion technique(s)

bullet

Exposure to timpani, bass drum, hand cymbals, and suspended cymbal

bullet

Exposure to multiple small accessory percussion instruments

bullet

Basic maintenance of standard percussion instruments

Each student must supply:   Reference Text - “Handy Manual - Fingering Charts for Instrumentalists” by Clarence V. Hendrickson,  the woodwind instrument of his/her choice, instrument method book, instrument accessories (reeds, neck straps, etc.), folding music stand, snare drum practice pad, and one pair of snare drum sticks.

Each student shall be expected to perform on the woodwind instrument of his/her choice at a level equal to two or more years of group instruction.  Each student shall also be expected to perform rudimentary snare drum exercises or a solo.  Lesson plans shall be developed, transpositions used, and assessment tools devised for future use as teachers of young instrumentalists ranging from elementary through intermediate and advanced performance levels.

Students are expected to attend a minimum of 11 scheduled classes, submit all assignments, and successfully complete all quizzes and exams.
