Textbook: A Creative Approach to Music Fundamentals, 9th edition, 2007, by William Duckworth. Publisher: Thomson/Schirmer (available at the Manhattanville bookstore)

Materials: Manuscript paper or manuscript notebook

Course: This course is a full-year introduction to the essential vocabulary of music as well as notation and performance. Aspects of rhythm, melody, and harmony are studied in a sequential manner over the course of two semesters. Success in class will depend on regular attendance and prompt completion of assignments.

Attendance Policy: A student with 2 or more unexcused absences will need to meet with the department chair and the instructor.

Grading policy:

            Weekly assignments, quizzes, and tests  50% of grade

            Mid-term examination                                20% of grade

            Final Examination                                        20% of grade

            Attendance and participation                    10% of grade

 

COURSE OUTLINE

We will cover the first seven chapters of the textbook. Please note the CD-ROM that is attached to the back page of your text; it contains many helpful exercises. In addition, the following sites provide alternate explanations and offer additional exercises that you might find useful:
