SYLLABUS FOR MUE 2067 

INSTRUMENTAL RUDIMENTS I - Brass/Percussion

Brass instrumental instruction shall encompass the following aspects: 

bulletFundamental instruction in performance of Trumpet, French horn, and Trombone 
bulletInformation regarding playing procedures of additional brass instruments including, but not limited to, Baritone horn and Tuba
bulletInformation regarding scoring techniques and uses of brass instruments in a variety of musical levels and styles 
bulletExposure to accepted instrumental music instruction method books 
bulletExposure to basic repertoire for individual brass instruments and for small and large ensembles 
bulletBasic maintenance and emergency repair techniques of brass instruments 

Percussion instrumental instruction shall encompass the following aspects: 

bulletFamiliarity with performance technique(s) on snare drum - Exposure to mallet percussion technique(s) 
bulletExposure to timpani, bass drum, hand cymbals, and suspended cymbal 
bulletExposure to multiple small accessory percussion instruments
bulletBasic maintenance of standard percussion instruments

Each student must supply: Reference Text - "Handy Manual-Fingering Charts for Instrumentalists" by Clarence V. Hendrickson, the brass instrument of his/her choice, instrument method book, instrument accessories (mouthpiece, valve oil, etc.), folding music stand, snare drum practice pad, and one pair of snare drum sticks. Students should contact the Instructor in advance of first class meeting for specifics regarding method book designation and snare drum stick size.

Each student shall be expected to perform fundamental exercises and a solo on the brass instrument of his/her choice at a level equal to two or more years of group instruction. Each student shall also be expected to perform rudimentary snare drum exercises and a solo. Lesson plans shall be developed, transpositions used, and assessment tools devised for future use as teachers of young instrumentalists ranging from elementary through intermediate and advanced performance levels.

Students are expected to attend a minimum of 11 scheduled classes, submit all assignments, and successfully complete all quizzes and exams.
