MuH 2016History of Jazz

Objectives:

Through reading, listening, discussion, and viewing related multimedia, we will survey the evolution of jazz, including its origins, its musical elements, and the contributions of its major artists. We will discuss and examine the influence on and of jazz music as it relates to American culture. I hope to encourage the development of listening skills necessary for stylistic and structural analysis. Prior musical knowledge is not required.

Outcomes:

After completing this course, students will be able to:

          • present a model of that which defines ‘jazz’

          • relate the characteristics of representative performance periods in jazz

          • identify certain major performances in the jazz repertoire

          • describe the characteristics of significant jazz performers

          • present a model of the essential changes which have occurred in jazz history

Requirements:

1. Active participation in classroom analysis and discussion  (20 % of final grade)

2. Weekly reading and listening assignments* (evaluated by assessments such as quizzes, participation, and examinations)

3. Brief written recording review and artist biography (15 % of final grade)

4. Attendance of and brief written reaction to a live jazz event (15 % of final grade)

5. Mid-term and final examinations (20% and 30% of final grade, respectively

In completing the objectives and outcomes noted above, MuH 2016 will address the following New York State Learning Standards in the areas of Music and Social Studies:

Music

Standard 3: Responding to and Analyzing Works of Art

Students will respond critically to a variety of works in the arts, connecting the individual work to other works and to other aspects of human endeavor and thought.

Standard 4: Understanding the Cultural Dimensions and Contributions of the Arts

Students will develop an understanding of the personal and cultural forces that shape artistic communication and how the arts in turn shape the diverse cultures of past and present society.

Social Studies

Standard 1: History of the United States and New York

Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in the history of the United States and New York.

Standard 2: World History

Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of major ideas, eras, themes, developments, and turning points in world history and examine the broad sweep of history from a variety of perspectives
