Timothy J. Roden, Craig Wright and Bryan Sims, ed. Anthology for Music in Western Civilization, Volume I - Antiquity through the Baroque,  (Thomson-Schirmer, 2006).

Required Recordings:

Craig Wright and Bryan Sims, ed. Audio CD for Wright/Simms' Music in Western Civilization. Volume I - Antiquity through the Baroque,  (Thomson-Schirmer, 2006).

Writing Assignments:  There will be three written assignments for the course: one from each era of music history.

Assignment I: Middle Ages (5%)-- Choose one work from the anthology and describe how the purpose of  the work determines its form and its relationship to the historical environment.

Assignment II: Renaissance (10%)-- .Choose two works from our syllabus from different countries or traditions and compare the techniques used to accomplish the composers' purposes.

Assignment III: Baroque (15%)-- Choose a major work by either Bach or Handel and compare it to two works of a similar genre: one from the Middle Ages, one from the Renaissance.
