Manhattanville Electronic Music Band
The objective of the Manhattanville Electronic Music Band
is to help students develop an understanding of the use of electronic
instruments, computers, and MIDI in live performance. The band’s
instrumentation is flexible, and all instrumentalists, singers, and music
technologists (engineers) are welcome. Diverse
styles of music will be pursued, and original student compositions which fully
utilize the potential of electronic music and computers are encouraged. Open to
all students with the permission of the director.
The MIDI instruments include MIDI guitar with Roland GR-33 sound module, MIDI
wind controller (Yamaha WX5), MIDI Drums (Roland VS-3), Yamaha Motif, and any
number of keyboard controllers. In addition we have a Mackie Onyx Mixer and
loud speakers. We also have a MOTU MIDI interface (8x8) with which to
manipulate up to 8 MIDI instruments. Two software programs which we will be
using are Digital Performer 4 and Max/MSP 4.5.
Over the years we have performed works by Frank Zappa, Radiohead, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Lennon/McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Weather Report, Dream Theater, and many of our student composers.
