    A Transition to Advanced Mathematics – 6th edition

              by Smith, Eggen, and St. Andre

    Thomson Brooks/Cole Publishers

 

Topics to be covered:

 

      Propositional logic and methods of proof

      Set theory

      Induction

      Equivalence relations and partitions

      Functions

      Countable vs. uncountable sets

      Intro to abstract algebra

     

           

Requirements for course:

 

     Class attendance and homework assignments

     3 tests

     Final examination – week of April 28

 

 

Calculator policy:

 

You will NOT be allowed to use graphing calculators or cell-phones during the tests and final exam.  A scientific calculator (like the TI-30Xa or Casio FX-260) or a simple function calculator (add, sub, mult, div, square roots, etc.) is permitted. If you plan to use a calculator other than one of those, it must be approved in advance.
