Jane
Austen on Screen (ENG 2xxx; 1 credit)
course description:
This course examines a set of screen adaptations of the six novels of Jane Austen (1775-1817) and a new biopic of Austen, which will all be broadcast on PBS's "Masterpiece Theatre" program from January to April 2008. We will discuss the screen versions as well as what this "Masterpiece Theatre" series suggests about the significance of Austen to contemporary popular audiences. Each student will read one of Austen's novels and will write an analytical paper about the screen adaptation of that novel. Weekly reading responses and active participation in discussion are required.
